Interview with Pat Esden, author of A Hold On Me

1. Can you tell us a little about your book? Is it your debut novel?A hold on me copy

A HOLD ON ME is my debut novel. It’s a new adult gothic novel with paranormal elements and a touch of romance.

Here’s a blub:

She never wanted to return.
He wants nothing more than for her to leave.
But the fire between them is as strong as the past that haunts them.

Annie Freemont grew up on the road, immersed in the romance of rare things, cultivating an eye for artifacts and a spirit for bargaining. It’s a freewheeling life she loves and plans to continue—until her dad is diagnosed with dementia. His illness forces them to return to Moonhill, their ancestral home on the coast of Maine—and to the family they left behind fifteen years ago, after Annie’s mother died in a suspicious accident.

Once at Moonhill, Annie is shocked when her aunt separates her from her father. The next time Annie sees him, he’s a bizarre, violent shadow of his former self. Confused, she turns to an unlikely ally for support—Chase, the dangerously seductive young groundskeeper. With his dark good looks and powerful presence, Chase has an air of mystery that Annie is irresistibly drawn to. But she also senses that behind his penetrating eyes are secrets she can’t even begin to imagine. Secrets that hold the key to the past, to Annie’s own longings—and to all of their futures. Now, to unlock them, she’ll have to face her greatest fears and embrace her legacy…

2. Are you a plotter or a free writer?

I’m a plotter. When I wrote A HOLD ON ME (book #1 Dark Heart series), I used a corkboard and index cards to create a flexible outline, then wrote a rough draft. For Dark Heart book #2, I created a 25 page detailed outline. My outline for book #3 is already up to 30 pages and it’s not quite finished. Do you see a trend here?

3. Is your book part of a series or a standalone?

It’s a part of the Dark Heart series coming from Kensington Books. There are three novels that will release six months apart. February 23, 2016, Fall 2016, and Spring 2017. Also, readers will want to subscribe to my newsletter because there will be short stories and free extras available to subscribers. The subscription link is on my website’s contact page:

4. Do you require silence when writing or do you listen to music?

When I’m brainstorming and working a first draft, I listen to music to transport me into the world of the story and my character heads. If you look at my Pinterest boards you’ll see some of the songs that I listened to while writing A HOLD ON ME. However, when I’m working on later drafts and revising, I need total silence.

5. Are you writing your next book? Can you share a little about it?

I’m working on book #2 right now. It’s due to my editor on September 1. After that, I’ll be diving into the next book in the series. But I’m not going to say anything about them at this point. I don’t want to spoil the first book. I will tell you that the main character, Annie Freemont, will be going to some pretty dark places, face more than one dangerous foe—and there will be more kissing and sexy times. 6. How long were you writing before getting a publishing contract?

I started writing with the intention of being published in 2004. I began by writing short stories and novelettes. A few years later, I moved on to novel length and started querying agents. The idea for A HOLD ON ME (originally titled Moonhill) came to me in April of 2011. I began writing it in late November, finished the first draft on March 2012 and began querying in August. In October, I signed with my agent after she spotted the hook for A HOLD ON ME in an online contest. I revised with my agent, then the novel went on submission to editors in 2013. I received an offer for the series in August 2014. I think aspiring writers tend to hear about overnight submissions and sales, but more often it’s a long journey that takes patience and a willingness to revise.

7. When does your book release?

A HOLD on Me comes out on February 23. There are lots of places where it can be pre-ordered.
