Can you tell us a little about your book? Is it your debut novel?
SCARDUST is my debut new adult novel. This book took me more than two years to write and deals with some pretty heavy subject matter. This story is about not letting your past define your future, about determination and dreams, love, forgiveness, and Mars! Here’s the unofficial blurb:
An ex-juvenile delinquent’s dream of becoming an astronaut gets derailed when he finds a beat-up amnesiac in the Texas desert, and is forced to confront a painful truth that could shatter both his dream of Mars and his heart.
Are you a plotter or a free writer?
More and more I’m becoming a plotter. I used to pants my novels but they would often stall around the 20k word mark, so I turned to plotting instead. Now that I write from outlines, the writing process is much easier and more fluid. I also go back and create beat sheets before diving into revisions and this has helped a lot as well.
Is your book part of a series or a standalone?
SCARDUST is a standalone science fiction novel.
Do you require silence when writing or do you listen to music?
I always listen to music! I create playlists for each novel and even create playlists for certain characters or individual scenes. SCARDUST has its own playlist featuring music by bands like Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You, If These Trees Could Talk, and God is an Astronaut. This kind of electronic, ambient music was perfect for SCARDUST and the sometimes surreal elements of the story.
Are you writing your next book? Can you share a little about it?
I’m always writing the next book 😉 I’m currently working on a YA fantasy novel inspired by the folk-tales I grew up on as a kid in South Africa. It’s really different from what I usually write but I’m loving it.
How long were you writing before getting a publishing contract?
Not that long. I sort of got published by accident to be honest, when – on a whim – I sent out a NaNoWriMo novel to a few small publishers. I never anticipated getting published. It took another two years and two more books before I signed with my agent though and landing a publishing deal through her.
When does your book release?
SCARDUST releases on February 8th, 2016 from Entangled.
Suzanne is a tattooed storyteller from South Africa. She currently lives in Sweden and is busy making friends with the ghosts of her Viking ancestors. Although she has a Master’s degree in music, Suzanne prefers conjuring strange worlds and creating quirky characters. When she grows up, she wants to be an elf – until then, she spends her time (when not writing) wall climbing, buying far too many books, and entertaining her shiba inu, Lego.
