Can you tell us a little about your book? Is it your debut novel?
COLD SUMMER is a debut novel, set to release spring 2017 by Sky Pony Press. COLD SUMMER is about a teen suffering from PTSD—due to repeatedly being pulled back in time to the front lines of WWII—must find a way to stop the pulls from happening with the help of the childhood friend he secretly loves before he dies on the battlefield.
Are you a plotter or a free writer?
I’m most definitely a free writer. When I get a book idea, I let it float around in my head a month or two, sometimes longer, figuring out who the characters are and the main plot points. Then I just write it, filling in the stuff between as I go along. It’s that unknown aspect that keeps me writing until the end, and if I plot everything out, that’s taken away and I would never finish.
Is your book part of a series or a standalone?
It’s a standalone right now, as are most of my books. They have potential to have sequels, but I love standalone books the most because I love being able to start and finish a story in one book. A lot of book series feel drawn out to me, almost forced, so when I do get a book idea, I figure out if it’s going to be a series or not from the start.
Do you require silence when writing or do you listen to music?
When writing the first draft, I can do it anywhere, listening to anything. I wrote one of my books in the evenings while my husband played Halo or watching baseball. But when I’m editing, I usually need silence. If I decide to put on my headphones, I usually only listen to instrumental music because I need to focus.
Are you writing your next book? Can you share a little about it?
This is a tricky question for me. Right now, I’m visiting some older manuscripts and editing them. In a way, they feel new because it’s been so long. But I also have a new book brewing in my head that I would like to start soon. I can’t say much, but it’s got pirates and deserts in it.
How long were you writing before getting a publishing contract?
I started writing when I was 20, so that make it seven years and six finished books later. Lesson here: Never give up!
